Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98–1543) was a German-Swiss painter and printmaker, celebrated as one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. Born in Augsburg, Germany, he was part of a family of artists, including his father, Hans Holbein the Elder, and his brother, AmbrosiusÂ
Holbein's early career flourished in Basel, Switzerland, where he created murals, religious art, and book illustrations. His work was influenced by Renaissance humanism and artistic trends from Italy, France, and the Netherlands. He gained international recognition with portraits of Desiderius ErasmusÂ
In 1526, Holbein traveled to England, where he became associated with Thomas More and later served as King's Painter to Henry VIII. His portraits of the royal family and court members are iconic, showcasing his mastery of realism and symbolism. Holbein also designed jewelry and festive decorationsÂ
Holbein's art was highly valued during his lifetime and continues to be admired for its precision and depth. He passed away in London in 1543, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile and influential artistÂ
