Most people are aware of the rare Swedish stamp, the Treskilling Yellow, of which there is only one copy known to exist. Â
Far fewer of us are aware of the man behind the first issue of Swedish stamps. He was a man of his times, living an extraordinarily interesting life, of which stamp production comprised a relatively brief period.
And yet Sparre took on the postage stamp challenge head on: engraving the master dies, then working out the entire production process by himself, right through to his own unique design of the perforations.  Â
