We hope you could join us Feb 10 as David K. Foot presented the Postal History of Campbell Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site that lies halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica.

After World War II New Zealand converted a coast watching station into a weather station.

In 1952 this site was upgraded to a meteorological and research station with postal facilities. The site was closed in 1995. The Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of a staff of up to 10 on 1-year assignments was the designated senior postal official.

In David's display at NTSC's 2021 Exhibition and in tonight's talk he touched on:

  • 4 circular date stamps used sequentially over the period

  • hand stamped outgoing cachets,

  • including the iconic 'Poppleton' cachet;

  • a mini study on 1950's Mildred Hobson covers;

  • plus autographed covers by station personnel and

  • covers from supply ships and other visiting vessels

  • Scarce items include a 1950 pre-post office cover from HMNZ Pukukai's visit to the island, an inwards cover to OIC Poppleton in 1960 with receiver cancel error and an illegal provisional issue cover produced when the post office ran out of stamps in 1981 for which the postmaster was reprimanded by the New Zealand Post Office.

Campbell Island covers were processed by the OIC and station personnel, often for philatelists, posted worldwide via New Zealand.
