On June 20th at 7pm, Gilles Morel presented his research via ZOOM into the Dead Letter Office mails of the 1914 disaster of the Empress of Ireland.Â
On May 28, 1914, the Canadian RMS Empress of Ireland, was hit by the Storstad, a Norwegian collier and sank in 14 minutes, near Father's point, causing the loss of 1012 lives.Â
Gilles' presentation explored the recovery efforts by the divers, and the treatment of the recovered mail by the Dead Letter Office, both locally (in Rimouski) and in Ottawa. Â
